In this project, we were able to create a product, the safety pin, that would express awareness of the current social issues relevant around the world. This is a simple gesture in a subtle yet aesthetically pleasing way to send a message to others, "You are safe with me."

Originating from the United States, the safety pin movement has given people the chance to show their support for the vulnerable discreetly. For a society that is mostly homogenous and has a tendency to keep things subtle, I decided to create this pin with the intention of rendering a similar feeling but in a fashionable way. This is reconstructing the original design of the flat pin and give it a modern twist. I dedicated a lot of time and effort into the design with its simple yet somewhat erudite look. The pin was created in two colors (silver and gold) consisting of a chain, white flower, and a circle pendant. One was made post production since inventory ran low, but the message was still similar with our narrative. "Love" to "This too shall pass."

These pins came with stickers that had encouraging messages. The first ten orders were able to receive handwritten cards with more encouraging messages related to diversity and expressing our genuine gratitude for those who showed their support. In this way, we were able to create a product that not only could be used for practical purposes but also hold a deeper meaning to it.

All of the profit collected from this project was donated to UNICEF. UNICEF works in over 190 countries and territories to save children’s lives, to defend their rights, and to help them fulfill their potential, from early childhood through adolescence. We wanted to donate because of their views on social inclusion, gender equality, and overall their work helping children.

안전핀 프로젝트를 끝마치고 새로운 프로젝트에 대해 회의를 진행한 결과, 종강까지 남은 기간을 고려하며 종강을 기념하고 학생들이 종강 소감을 적을 수 있는 게시판을 만들자는 의견이 형성되었습니다. 그리고 게시판을 부착할 장소로 여러 교내식당을 돌아다니며 허가를 구했습니다. 

게시판 프로젝트는 학생들이 공유하며 함께 참여할 수 있는 프로젝트이기 때문에 좋은 취지를 고려해 모든 교내식당 측에서 허가를 주실 것이라는 저희의 기대와 달리, 모든 교내식당 측이 긍정적인 답변을 주시지 않으셨습니다. 이에 아쉬움이 없지는 않았지만 자하연 식당 측에서 감사히도 허락을 해주셔 자하연 식당 측이 제공하는 공간에 맞추어 게시판을 제작했습니다. 재료를 미리 구비하고 팀원과 만나 게시판을 성공적으로 제작하고 부착했습니다.

19일 자하연식당을 방문해 확인해보니 학생들의 코멘트가 몇 몇 남겨져있었습니다. 대부분은 종강을 하거나 아직 하지 않은 것에 대한 짧은 코멘트였고, 소수는 학식/음식에 대한 코멘트였습니다. 후자는 자하연식당 측에서 제공해주신 공간이 학식 의견개진란 아래였기 때문에 의견란과 혼동했기 때문인 것 같습니다. 몇 몇 학생분들께서 게시판에 작성해주셨지만 기대한 것만큼 활발하지는 않았습니다. 이는 게시판을 걸어둔 기간이 넉넉하지 않았고 많은 학생들이 정식종강일에 종강을 하지 않기 때문이라 추측합니다. 또한 게시판에 남겨진 코멘트의 다양성이 확보되지 않고 저희가 의도한 학생 간의 참여 및 어울림이 강조되지 않은 이유는 “종강 기념”이라는 타이틀 때문인 것 같습니다. 학생 간의 인터렉션을 유도할 수 있는 소감과 메세지를 추출하기 위해선 게시판의 타이틀 역시 그것에 중점을 맞추어야 할 것 같습니다. 예를 들어 “서로를 응원하는 메세지” 등 학생 간의 인터렉션을 권장하는 메세지를 추가하면 좋을 것 같습니다. 이러한 문제점을 개선한다면 서로를 향한 다양한 학생들의 메세지/소감 교환이 더욱 활발히 이루어지는 게시판 프로젝트로 발전할 것이라 생각합니다.
