The recruiting of the 4th Diversity Pioneers internship occurred for two weeks from August 23 (Mon) to September 5 (Sun), and as a result, a total of 37 interns were selected. These interns are divided by 5 teams as team support and are composed by 28 undergraduates and 9 graduates including 9 international students. A leading theme of this semester's internship activities was determined to be 'Breaking Down Barriers Between SNU Students: A wise life of exploring diversity'. As the 4th stage of social distancing continues due to COVID-19, most classes are being conducted virtually in September, and according to this policy, the internship orientation and team activities will be temporarily held virtually.

The orientation was held on Zoom from 5pm, September 9, 2021 for 2 hours with all participants attending. As the ‘Cultural Diversity Case Study’, a cooperative project with the Arts Council Korea (thereafter, ARKO) under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, was added for the first time as one of the essential activities to the internship program this semester, officials from ARKO attended the orientation. The orientation opened with greetings in the order of the Chair of SNU Diversity Council, Prof. Wha Sook Jeon, council member Jiseon Jang, and the ARKO’s Director Yongsuk Jang. This was followed by an introduction about the internship program by the Expert Coordinator Saebom Kong and a briefing about the ARKO Cultural Diversity Case Study by the Assistant Manager of ARKO, Jihyun Moon. Soon after, 37 students briefly presented their names, class year, college they are in, motivations for applying to this internship, and a few words on being selected as an intern. In the second half of the orientation, the Senior Expert Coordinator Yookyung Bae conducted a 40 minute session on diversity with the title ‘The Condition Needed for a Multiculture/Diversity Inclusive Society’. Here, we shared about the current situation and problems of Korean society from a multicultural/diversity perspective, the contemplation of the meaning of multicultural citizenship and multiculturalism, the characteristics of intercultural sensitivity by stage, and the need for institutional reflection towards an inclusive society.

Ten teams were formed by grouping students with similar keywords drawn from the project plans they had submitted with their internship application. In the following few weeks, each team will establish team names and plan out detailed activities for this semester.
