In summer 2018, the SNU Diversity Council oversaw DaMo (Dayangseong Moim, or “diversity gathering”), a study group composed of winners of the 2018 Diversity Pioneers Challenge. Its primary purpose was to develop the members’ prizewinning ideas into policies that might be proposed to the university administration in order to spread a culture of respect for diversity on campus.
Beginning in late June, DaMo met five times over an eight-week period, and its seven participants were diverse, including graduate and undergraduate students, staff, and faculty, as well as three international members. Its meetings were conducted half in English and half in Korean, and always featured lively discussions.
Ideas honored by the contest judges—study groups for students with multidisciplinary majors, support for students with visual impairments, the improvement of exchange programs between domestic and international students, a cultural sensitivity outreach program, a permanent English language education program targeted toward students and faculty, and an exchange program for domestic and international faculty—were fleshed out, and will be considered by the council’s Sub-council for Education & Promotion and the full council for submission to the university’s main administration as policy suggestions for the promotion of diversity.
