In 2018, the SNU Diversity Council carried out a planned study that determined and analyzed “The Current Status of and Issues with Non-Tenure Track Faculty and Researchers at SNU” (lead researcher: Professor Kangjae LEE, Dept. of Chinese Language and Literature, SNU). Through an online survey, the study was able to depict the situation facing non-tenure track personnel, the largest group at SNU, based on vivid materials collected person by person from members of the group itself. However, the study also used a single survey for all participants, regardless of academic area, and focused its attention mainly on lecturers in the humanities and social sciences, the group expected to be in the most difficult position. Because of this, it was unable to reflect the clear differences between doctorate-holders in the humanities and social sciences and those in natural sciences and engineering. Though both groups may be non-tenure track personnel, the circumstances they face are very different.

With this in mind, this study analyzed separately the employment situation of doctoral graduates in the humanities and social sciences and the circumstances of non-tenure research personnel in the natural sciences and engineering, and investigated the circumstances of teaching professors working at the Faculty of Liberal Education, one of the larger groups of non-tenure track teaching personnel at SNU. Unlike the previous study, we used the complete enumeration method so that this research could be used as baseline data for future research and policymaking about SNU’s non-tenure track personnel.

Purpose of the Research

As a follow-up to the Diversity Council’s 2018 planned research project “The Current Status of and Issues with Non-Tenure Track Faculty and Researchers at SNU”, to focus on those classified in the previous study as long-term, non-tenure track, full-time faculty and researchers and, through a causal analysis of non-tenure track employment, seek to recommend support measures for SNU’s non-tenure track, full-time personnel

Composition of the Research
  • Part I: Analysis of the employment situation of recent graduates of doctoral programs in the humanities, social sciences, or mathematical sciences
  • Part II: Analysis of the circumstances of teaching professors at the Faculty of Liberal Education
  • Part III: Analysis of the circumstances of non-tenure track research personnel in the natural sciences, engineering, medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, or pharmacy
