On July 20th, the Global Institute for Social Responsibility (GISR) held a kickoff ceremony and training session on gender sensitivity, sexual harassment prevention, diversity, and mental health for the 110 students it will be sending to do volunteer work in Vietnam, Nepal, Laos, and Uzbekistan during the summer break. The session on diversity, which last 90 minutes and was led by Diversity Council expert coordinator Yookyung Bae, was included for the first time.

Dr. Bae’s lecture, entitled “The Qualifications for a Multicultural, Diverse, and Inclusive Society”, in cluded many real-life examples as it covered the common issues facing humanity and the changing realities of the world, such as the important of global knowledge and understanding; the questions of whether South Korea is a multicultural nation and what multicultural citizenship is; an introduction to research about the stages of development of cultural sensitivity; overseas universities’ diversity-related policies and multiculturalism issues; and what South Korea must to do move forward as a good, dignified society. She concluded by urging the students to come back from their time abroad having learned and felt many things by having as many new experiences as possible.
