The “SNU People Going Global: Establishing a Culture of Diversity” seminar, which has been offered at SNU’s Academy of University Administration since 2018, is aimed at all of the university’s staff. This year , the seminar consisted of a 90-minute presentation from Diversity Council expert coordinator Yookyung Bae titled “Understanding and Implementing Diversity, and Related Challenges”. Dr. Bae spoke to an audience of around 60 staff members on April 18th, 2019, in the Asia Center’s Yeongwon Hall.
Dr. Bae began by describing the reason why many overseas universities and businesses create diversity reports, and then discussed diversity among SNU’s staff and the campus community as a whole, the relationship between diversity and inclusivity, the concept of cultural sensitivity and tools for measuring it, the history of diversity-related policies at universities in the USA and the main issues they address, and the main functions of diversity-related bodies in the university. Next, she explained why SNU publishes a yearly diversity report and outlined the Diversity Council’s major activities last year and this year. Finally, mentioning the inevitability of the uneasy relationship between social unification and acceptance of diversity, she emphasized that respect for differences and mediation of conflicts become possible through communication and understanding brought about by open dialogue.
