The New Faculty Orientation Program, held each February and August, began its spring 2020 semester session on the morning of February 18th, 2020, at Yang Du Seok Hall in Kwanjeong Library. This semester’s program welcomed 56 new tenure-track faculty members, eight of whom are international faculty, to SNU. At 9 A.M. on the first day of the two-day program, dean of academic affairs Seokmin Shin gave the opening address. The Diversity Council, participating in the program for the second time, was given the third slot among organizations, preceded only by the SNU Senate and SNU Faculty Council. Diversity Council chair Ki-Sun Hong’s ten-minute presentation, entitled “SNU’s Diversity”, outlined the reasons the council was founded, its main functions, and the state of diversity at the university according to the Diversity Report that the council releases yearly. In addition, Chairperson Hong emphasized that the basic mindset of diversity goes beyond “protecting the weak” to encompass mutual understanding of and respect for difference. She concluded her presentation by urging the new faculty members to share their fresh ideas and honest opinions with the university.
