I'm Lee Eun-joo, chairman of the Seoul National University Diversity Committee.
Respect for diversity is essential if a community of members from different backgrounds, identities, perspectives, and experiences is to be sustainable. Nevertheless, the understanding of diversity, the value it places on diversity, and the belief in the right way to realize diversity are very diverse. For some, diversity is a fairness of opportunity, for others, a safe learning and working environment, and for others, an experience in which one's voice is represented in a public forum.
The Diversity Committee recognizes these differences as they are, but beyond those differences, it seeks to focus on the principle that Seoul National University should be the site of life where everyone is respected. I believe that the diversity we seek is ultimately based on respect and acceptance of human dignity, and that no conditions should be a reason for exclusion and silence.
Following the efforts of the past 10 years, the Diversity Committee will strive to examine institutions and practices, lower invisible barriers, and create a culture of understanding each other so that each member of our university can fully develop and demonstrate his or her capabilities. We will listen to your diverse voices and learn and improve together. We ask for your interest and participation.
