The policy forum on the Diversity Council’s 2017 research project “Research to Develop Diversity Indicators” was held on Sept. 13 in the Asia Center’s Youngwon Hall. The research team presented the proposed diversity indicators it had developed and obtained feedback on them from the panel and the forum’s attendees.

After explaining the meaning and goals of the project, its lead researcher, Professor Kim Dongil of the Department of Education, presented 34 proposed indicators in 14 categories developed since the project began in April. Next, four panelists spoke. Professor Kang Sang-Jin of the Department of Philosophy raised the issues of the meaning and interpretive power of diversity by arguing that the research team’s arguments for diversity management represent 'social unification thesis', 'creativity thesis' and 'university ideology thesis'. Professor Chey Jeanyung of the Department of Psychology made several suggestions for improving the meaningfulness and validity of the indicators. Professor Oh Hye-young of Ewha Womans University presented on the difficulties that international students face at Korean universities, and finally, Deputy Director Kim Eun-mi of SNU’s Office of Planning and Coordination analyzed roughly ten types of university evaluation methods currently employed at SNU and suggested conditions under which the diversity indicators could become effective tools for university evaluation.
