In an effort to promote diversity, we aimed at contributing to the globalization endeavors that SNU has been committed to. We first constructed the survey questionnaires after interviewing international students and staff members in the related institutions so as to incorporate the issues and hardships encountered by some international students throughout their pursuit of academic degree at SNU.

This survey covers both scholastic and non-scholastic aspects of international student experience during their stay at SNU. Based on the findings in this survey outcome, we intend to make several policy proposal.

Purpose of the Research

To understand the difficulties that regular (degree program) international students, who make up roughly 1% of undergraduate students and 9% of graduate students, face in their studies and campus life, and to recommend policies to address them.

Survey

From May 28 to June 3, an online survey was made available to SNU’s 1,323 regular international students; 432 responses were received (32.7% response rate)

Policy recommendations

a. Short-term recommendations
First, English subtitles for online lecture components of courses should be investigated.
Second, international students who are eligible for work-study jobs and proficient in English should be made responsible for communications tasks.
Third, support should be given to SNU QUILL, an English-language print magazine for students.

b. Medium- and long-term recommendations
First, establish a body dedicated to counselling international students.
Second, colleges with many international students should create an international student center.
Third, create new courses on academic Korean and Korean culture.
Fourth, colleges and departments should collect materials to apprehend the current whereabouts of international alumni.
