Over a yearlong period beginning in Oct. 2016, the first group of diversity council representatives worked closely with the SNU Diversity Council to make great contributions to the writing of the “2016 Diversity Report” and other council activities. Two weeks after the council held a press conference announcing the publication of the report, it conducted its second workshop for diversity representatives on Oct. 27, 2017, in Hoam Faculty House’s Marronnier Hall. As in the previous year, the diversity representatives comprised two people (one high-ranking official and one staff member) from each of 38 SNU colleges and institutions.

At this year’s workshop, the council’s staff shared the major findings of the first diversity report’s analyses and discussed several diversity-related issues that it had brought to light, while a thirty-minute question-and-answer session gave the diversity representatives an opportunity to share their opinions and recommendations. The council also outlined the expected publication schedule of the second diversity report and called for the representatives’ continued assistance with its diversity promotion activities.

Major recommendations made by participants

  • Since the College of Nursing’s faculty is mainly female, statistics on its hiring diversity should focus on the percentage of men, not women
  • For the council’s second research project of the year, consider inviting excellent international researchers to join the research team
  • International students have made quite a few complaints about “original-language classes” (classes that are supposed to be conducted in languages other than Korean); research ways to address this issue
  • Strengthen original-language classes, taking domestic students’ preferences into consideration
  • To encourage international faculty to study the Korean language, consider measures such as reducing the teaching load of those doing so
